Dementia is an issue that we all need to take very seriously. It is an illness that can affect anyone with an increasing risk in later life (that’s 1 in 5 people over 80, and 1 in 20 people over 65). Around 700,000 people in the UK are experiencing the effects of a condition, such as Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, Lewy Body syndrome, which causes dementia. People with dementia will usually live for many years with the condition and, for most of the duration of their illness, will be cared for in their own homes by family and friends and their local community. For dementia is committed to improving standards of care and quality of life for all those affected by dementia.

Admiral Nurses are specialist mental health nurses who offer individual psychological and practical support to carers from the time of diagnosis for as long as necessary. They also provide consultancy and advice to other professionals working in the field, and work to raise awareness of the immense stresses and strains that caring for someone with dementia brings. Since its foundation in 1994, for dementia has set up teams of nurses in several areas of the country, and it is their aim to reach out to carers of people with dementia right across the UK. Each team of two nurses costs about £100,000 a year to maintain, and there is a need to constantly raise funds to support existing services as well as expand the network and carry out research and evaluation. Any funds we raise as a result of this Festival will be ring marked for Admiral Nursing in the Harrow Area.

For dementia training offers high quality training in all issues relevant to the care of older people and people with dementia, with a particular emphasis on the unqualified sector. For dementia training offers many courses covering such topics as ‘working with unusual behaviour’, ‘Developing positive relationships with relatives and carers’, ‘dementia: advanced skills’, ‘how to manage your stress’

For dementia Carer’s Network has been established to distribute newsletters, organise carer’s outings and has delivered a series of workshops designed to build carer’s confidence and encourage exchange of experiences.

For dementia receives NO STATE FUNDING and relies entirely on voluntary contributions.
