This Year's Charity

THE SHAW TRUST (Stanmore)

The Shaw Trust is a national charity providing employment, vocational training and support to people with disabilities. It was founded in a Wiltshire village called “Shaw” by local likeminded people who wanted more for the disabled and has for the last 12 years had a local centre at the Nurseries on Clamp Hill, Stanmore, near Old Redding. It is here that the Trust provides this support in various ways.

• There is a course called ‘Skills for Working Life’ which is a City and Guilds qualification, at entry level 3.
• Training at a Horticultural nursery in Stanmore to tend and grow plants for sale to the public on their seven acre site and thereby teach people to have the skills to work and socialise.
• Maintain and run three Cafés in the community in Harrow which provide a healthy home cooked meal at a reasonable cost. Training placements at these Cafés helps people acquire the skills needed to live independently and cook a meal.
• Linking healthy eating to food production and aiming to provide fresh fruit and vegetables from Clamp Hill to be used in the Cafés.

Any funds we manage to raise from this Festival will be used for work at Clamp Hill, in support of the main purpose of the Trust, which is to provide meaningful alternatives to employment for people who are farthest away from achieving it, and to provide time for them to gain in confidence and self esteem. It is hoped that we will be able to fit out a kitchen to train people for both cooking for themselves and for the Cafés. Long term aim is for a minibus.
