Mark Gooding studied with Bernard Keeffe and was appointed Director of Harrow Young Musicians in 1985. He took over as conductor of HYM Philharmonic Orchestra from Adrian Brown in 2001 who had worked with the orchestra since 1977. The Daily Telegraph observed after a concert given in the Queen Elizabeth Hall ‘the teenage members of HYM Philharmonic revealed all the drama and colour of a complex but arresting new score. Conducted with flair and enthusiasm by Mark Gooding, the music mattered to them, and they made it matter to us.’ (They were referring to the British premiere performance of Mark-Anthony Turnages Evening of Songs.) This really sums up Mark Gooding’s leadership.

Terry Jenkins is a retired opera singer. For 25 years he was a principal tenor with the English National Opera. He made his debut in 1976, and performed widely in Europe and the USA.

Harrow Young Musicians organises musical activities for young people who live in and around Harrow. It has gained an enviable reputation for music making to a high level in a lively and friendly atmosphere. There are now nine groups, the HYM Philharmonic Orchestra, HYM Symphony Orchestra, HYM Sinfonia, HYM Academy Strings, HYM Steel, HYM Symphonic Winds, HYM Concert Band, HYM Senior Band and HYM Junior Band. HYM has weekly rehearsals, summer courses, and a series of public concerts at the Great Hall, Hatch End. Senior groups also perform at venues like the Barbican, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Watford Coliseum and others and then there is the Extravaganza in the Royal Albert Hall. Touring is another exciting feature of HYM life. Recent tours have been to Italy, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Finland, Spain and the Czech Republic. HYM concerts often feature great musicians who have also given masterclasses to students. Some of these people include Janice Watson, Jack Brymer, Fiona Canfield, the late Philip Langridge, Julian Lloyd Webber and many others.

HYM has given honourable support to many local, national and international charities at its concerts. They are too numerous to list but include St Lukes Hospice, Deaf Children’s Society, The Romanian Orphanage Appeal, Cystic Fibrosis Research, the Tsunami Appeal and the establishment of a Trust to support all young musicians in Harrow with disabilities.

HYM became an independent company in 1997, receiving a grant from the Education Department of the London Borough of Harrow. It is managed by a committee comprising parents, councillors, the HYM Director, a member of staff, a student and co-opted members. HYM also relies on the support of a very active Parents’ Guild, which helps organise concert management, tours, catering, fund-raising and publicity. A patronage scheme exists to provide further financial support and encourage regular attendance at public concerts. HYM is based at Hatch End High School where most of the groups meet on Saturday mornings. Groups also meet in other Harrow schools on weekday evenings.
