American String Quartet Op 96

The first half opens with Mozart’s early and bright Italian String Quartet in C major K157, followed by the lovely Notturno from Borodin’s 2nd String Quartet (later immortalised in Kismet – And this is my Beloved); after this they will play Haydn’s The Bird Quartet, a delightful work from the father of the string quartet genre, where he shows his characteristic humour and invention – and plenty of bird sounds, and even a Slavonic folk song (prefiguring the next work ...). After the interval, the quartet performs Dvořák’s justifiably popular Op 96 American String Quartet in F major, one of his finest mature works, dating from his time in the USA, imbued with American folk influences and birdsong.

Rebecca grew up and lives in Pinner. After Haberdashers’ Girls, she gained an instrumental award to Cambridge, with postgraduate studies at the Royal Northern College. After an early career freelancing, including in the Caspian String Quartet, teaching is now her main focus, at Haberdashers’ Schools. She leads Watford Symphony Orchestra.

Erica studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Howard Davis and Sidney Griller, and enjoyed a versatile freelance career, with many London orchestras and a founding member of the String of Pearls quartet. She currently teaches at the Junior Royal Academy, Bedford School & Eton College.

Pip grew up in Cheltenham and played violin from age 10. After studying violin & viola at Birmingham Conservatoire, she transferred to the Royal Academy where her passion for viola arose through playing string quartets. She has enjoyed a diverse musical career with many London orchestras, West End shows & String of Pearls quartet. She teaches violin, viola & chamber music at Haberdashers’ Schools.

Jacky is a much sought-after and respected solo, chamber and professional session cellist and has appeared in the UK and at many international venues. Her playing began when she was 7 and within 2 years entered the Royal College of Music Junior Department and then received a scholarship to study at the prestigious Purcell Music school at the age of 12. She studied under legendary teachers like Amaryllis Fleming and Joan Dickson whilst at RCM and later with the Juilliard teacher Aldo Perisot at the Banff Centre of the Arts in Canada. She has been a guest principal of the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Scottish Opera, London Concert Orchestra and guest co-leader of BBC NOW and BBC Concert.
