Our celebrity recital features one of the finest British tenors with his regular pianist (for 20 years!). James Gilchrist’s repertoire ranges from Evangelist in Bach’s Passions through Romantic repertoire to English song, and contemporary works. Anna Tilbrook’s skilful pianism has accompanied many singers and instrumentalists.

In a typically diverse programme, they showcase English Song & German Lieder, starting with some of Purcell’s most noted songs, followed by Britten’s fine folksong arrangements. Songs of Travel by Vaughan Williams, to nine poems by RL Stevenson, is evocative, capturing many contrasting moods. Mendelssohn shows typical fluency and scope in these four songs. The recital ends with the nine Heine settings of Schumann’s Opus 24 Liederkreis, a cycle in which both texts and music are closely inter-related, with powerful impact.
