This year we add Indian Classical Music to PMF, starting with the South Indian, Carnatic tradition – “… a different ocean …”, as violinist Jyotsna Srikanth describes it. A charismatic exponent, she and her percussion colleagues will introduce us to this remarkable aesthetic, opening up a fresh sound world for us to explore. A reviewer at Womad commented that she has: “A profound respect for her heritage and performs Carnatic style with an impressive combination of emotional expression and masterful technique, and yet she refuses to be bound by tradition”. Jyotsna’s musical roots are in the south Indian classical tradition, and she is now Europe’s leading violinist in Carnatic music, based in London. Yet she is also an accomplished western classical musician and has collaborated across diverse musical genres. Her recitals combine a deep understanding of traditional music, balanced with a contemporary touch, captivating audiences across the globe.
