Pinner Parish Church Choir – around which Pinner Music Festival has grown – will delight us once more with a lovely mix of pieces. The ‘tops’ of the choir have always been youngsters, unusual now in a parish church. As a result, the Choir’s regular contributions to worship in Pinner and beyond (the photo by Fiona Rich is from a visit to Llandaff Cathedral in 2019), as well as in concerts, has fostered the musical talents and skills of numerous young people over very many years, initially guided by Michael Turvey, and more recently by Martin Singleton.
Their programme will feature Vivaldi’s Gloria (RV 589), a marvellous and suitably joyful piece that always brings a smile to the face. Beginning very brightly with something of a fanfare, the work has a great mix of choral colours and solos, and of moods, in its twelve short movements. The Venetian master displays all his characteristic invention in this work – with bouncing rhythms, moments of reflection, lovely harmonies and abundant lyricism. It was written for the Ospedale de la Pieta, for which Vivaldi wrote many of his finest works, and whose musicians and choir must have been of a high standard.
The Choir will also include a mix of anthems and – given the impressive instrumental and vocal solos given at PMF2021 and PMF2022 by younger members of the Choir – we shall, by popular request, hear more such items displaying their musicianship this year.
