THE PURCELL SCHOOL celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, and is Britain’s oldest specialist school for talented young musicians. It is a co-educational boarding and day school, based in Hertfordshire. The School holds the UNESCO Mozart Gold Medal in recognition of its unique contribution to music, education and international culture. The School’s Patron is HRH The Prince of Wales.

The aim of the School is to provide a dynamic, exciting and supportive environment in which young musicians can flourish. The School is funded largely by the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme which, along with its own scholarship funds, ensures that all pupils join the school on the strength of their musical potential irrespective of their parents ability to pay. Entry to the Purcell School is by audition. Most Purcell pupils go on to music college and some take up places at Oxbridge or other universities.  Nicholas Daniel (oboe), the first winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, and the 2010 winner, Lara Ömeroğlu, are former pupils.

The School has exceptional facilities, state-of-the-art classrooms, a professional recording studio, superb practice rooms and a recital hall with exceptional acoustics. Pupils have regular opportunities for performances – lunchtime concerts every weekday – Chamber music and orchestral recitals at school and in places like the Southbank Centre, St Albans Abbey and Wigmore Hall every year. Sir Simon Rattle, Paul Daniel and John Rutter have been guest conductors and master classes have been given by Zakhar Bron, Andras Schiff, Natalia Gutman and others.
