Quartet for the End of Time - Olivier Messiaen

This extraordinary work was the product of an extraordinary time. Messiaen was a prisoner of war in Silesia, and found himself with three other musicians, and a gift of manuscript paper, whilst starving and cold. He was sustained by his deep faith – deriving inspiration from Revelation: “There will be no more time …” – and his love of birdsong. The result, premiered in the concentration camp 75 years ago, is an exquisite work, complex yet refined, profoundly meditative, and affirmative despite the circumstances of its composition. The eight movements have eloquent titles, and each one explores, with different combinations of instruments, a different sound and colour world. Clarinettist Stuart King joins the Fibonacci Sequence in what he says is his favourite work. By candlelight, this promises to be a very special experience.

If you are attending the early evening Chamber Concert then your entry to the Late Night Concert is included, and you do not need to purchase extra tickets.
